More than 200 cases of monkeypox and orthopoxvirus have now been confirmed in the US, and experts are warning the virus is mutating more than previously thought.

In a study published Thursday in the journal Nature Medicine, a team of Portuguese researchers found that 2022 samples had an average of 50 mutations compared to 2018 and 2019 samples.

They wrote that the mutation rate was discovered by looking at 15 Monekipox virus sequences – may indicate a case of “accelerated evolution”.

A genetic analysis earlier this month suggested there were two different strains in the US, raising the possibility that the virus has been circulating for some time.
