We are hiring a part-time Research Assistant

FiveThirtyEight is looking for a diligent, organized and kind Researcher to help track and enter polls and other election data, and to contribute to political story research and projects.

This part-time position plays a critical role in supporting FiveThirtyEight. political coating and interactive projects like ours presidential approval tracker as well as opinion polls. You will help maintain the databases that power FiveThirtyEight, especially our one-of-a-kind database. survey database. And best of all, you’ll be part of a team that feeds real-time data into FiveThirtyEight’s 2022 medium-term forecast model.

This position is ideal for those who want to get into the world of political data. You will work closely with our Senior Researcher and collaborate with our political reporters, copywriters and visual journalists.

This is the US position. Remote work will be considered or you will be able to work from our New York office as soon as it reopens. The exact schedule is flexible (we will work with you to set it up), but hours are limited to 29 hours per week. We hope you stay at work until at least mid-2022, if not longer.

Responsibilities:

  • Stay up to date on surveys, collect and enter new surveys into our survey database, and upload data to our trackers and survey models.
  • Participate in original research on specific stories and projects.
  • Gain experience with survey operators in the US – their methodologies, features and quality.
  • Respond to inquiries from sociologists and the general public about our projects and datasets.

Main qualifications:

  • Experience with spreadsheets and data collection.
  • Solid understanding of US politics, especially electoral politics.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to perform repetitive tasks (such as data entry) to service important projects.
  • The ability to use online tools such as search engines and public databases to track specific information.
  • It’s convenient to call, send emails and look for sources to get them to send and answer questions about their data.
  • Willingness and willingness to work after hours. (Polls often take place late at night or on weekends.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A solid understanding of how surveys work and the basic statistical concepts needed to interpret them.
