At least 20 people were found dead in a nightclub in South Africa, the cause is still unknown

South African police are investigating the deaths of at least 20 people at a nightclub in the coastal city of East London early Sunday morning.

It is unclear what led to the deaths of the young people who were reportedly in attendance at a party marking the end of the winter school exams.

The local Daily Dispatch newspaper reported that bodies were strewn across tables and chairs with no visible signs of injury.

“We are unable to confirm the cause of death at this time,” Health Department spokesman Siyanda Manana said.

“We are going to perform an autopsy as soon as possible to determine the probable cause of death. The dead were taken to state morgues,” Manana added.

Police Minister Beki Chele was due to visit the scene on Sunday morning.

Club owner Siyahangela Ndevu told local television station eNCA that he was called to the scene early Sunday morning.

“I’m still not sure what really happened, but when they called me in the morning, they told me that the place was full and that some people were trying to break into the tavern,” he said.

“However, we will hear what the police say about the cause of death,” Ndevu added.
