ATLANTA, Georgia. (CBS46) – A 16-year-old girl is under arrest and a 13-year-old girl returned with her family after a traffic stop in Cherokee County, according to police.
Shortly before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, an officer stopped traffic on North Street near Railroad Street after noticing a driver holding his cell phone while driving, according to a press release.
When asked to show ID, the female driver failed to provide a driver’s license or ID, causing the officer to learn her name and date of birth.
After registering the vehicle, the officer learned that the 2014 Dodge Caravan she was driving had been stolen from North Carolina.
A search of the ventilator resulted in police finding 13 THC vape cartridges, three vape pens, nerd rope and “large amounts of underwear,” police said.
Investigators were then called to the scene and determined that the passenger was a 13-year-old girl who was a victim of human trafficking and kidnapping, police said, while officers and detectives determined that the driver was transporting the victim to another state.
The female driver was arrested and charged with human trafficking, kidnapping, providing false information, theft, illegal use of a wireless device, and possession of a controlled substance.
Police said it was later determined that the female driver was in fact a 16-year-old after establishing her true identity.
She is currently in custody at the regional juvenile detention center.
The victim was reunited with her family, police said.
Cantonal Police Chief Stephen Merrifield stated: “I would like to express my gratitude for the exceptional work of our officers and detectives in this case. Through a routine stop on the road and an exceptional investigation, the Cantonese Police Department has changed a young girl’s life forever for the better,” said Cantonal Police Chief Stephen Merrifield.
