We are hiring a Senior Visual Journalist

FiveThirtyEight is looking for a kind, collaborative and creative Senior Visual Journalist to join our Interactives and Graphics team. Senior Visual Journalists are the Design Leaders in the Newsroom at FiveThirtyEight. While they serve primarily as individual contributors, they also reinforce team work by mentoring younger visual journalists, giving and receiving feedback thoughtfully, and leading by example. We are looking for an experienced journalist who will have a good grasp of the news, pay close attention to detail and keep our work up to the highest standards.

The Senior Visual Journalist will report to either Deputy Editor-in-Chief for Interactives and Graphicsor Senior editor at Interactives and work closely with the rest of the Interactives team, as well as reporters and newsroom editors. This permanent position with benefits is located in the United States. Full-time remote work may be considered, but since our offices are located in New York City, we give preference to candidates who live in the area.

Responsibilities:

  • Creating complete, visually impactful stories and designs that engage, excite and engage our readers.
  • Leading the design process for our larger projects, including by creating principles, specifications, and other documentation to enable delegating work to a team.
  • Participation in the rotation of daily schedules and “secondment” of less experienced visual journalists
  • Inspire, mentor and guide teammates and colleagues in their visual work
  • Engaging in larger strategic discussions about visual style, site design, branding, accessibility and more.
  • Giving thoughtful, candid feedback to co-workers, peers and supervisors and receiving it openly in turn

Main qualifications:

  • Three or more years of relevant experience
  • Ability to use design software, especially Adobe Illustrator
  • Fluency in JavaScript and one or more of the libraries used to create graphics, such as D3, along with a functional understanding of the “full stack” of web development technologies.
  • Fluency in basic statistics – for example, a conversational understanding of concepts such as margin of error and regression analysis.
  • Seeking to collaborate with other visual journalists, news journalists, reporters and editors in the newsroom.
  • Deadline experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant experience of five or more years
  • Deep understanding of US politics, especially electoral politics, major US sports and/or science.
  • Experience with statistical programming languages ​​such as R
  • Experience with mapping and mapping tools such as QGIS and TopoJSON.
  • Experience in applying product design methods to large journalistic projects such as user research, rapid prototyping, and user testing.
