FiveThirtyEight is looking for an intern to work with our video and social teams in the summer of 2022. We are looking for a current journalism student or recent graduate who is passionate about accuracy, clarity, video production and storytelling; who knows how to create and develop communities on platforms such as TikTok or Instagram; and interested in sharing with this audience our flimsy, data-driven approach to sports and political journalism.
The main role of the trainee will be to create FiveThirtyEight’s video presence, engagement and following on social platforms. This means submitting and performing short social videos while developing and refining FiveThirtyEight’s cross-platform voice and tone. If they have an interest, the intern can talk or post a video. The intern will also help with overall video audience strategy and will work with our senior designer and video journalists to repurpose existing assets for distribution on our website and other platforms including Instagram, YouTube and Twitter.
Experience in journalism (whether in a journalism class, school paper, job or internship) is a must, as is some experience in political reporting. But “politics” doesn’t just mean electoral politics – it could mean that you have experience covering politics, social movements, how polarization affects your community, or something else.
The social/video intern will report to the senior social media and audience editor and senior video producer, but will also have the opportunity to work with reporters in the newsroom.
Applicants must be able to work full time from May or June to August. They must be current students or have a university degree in the last 18 months. This is a paid position and can be completed remotely.
- Some journalism experience
- Deep understanding of US politics and active consumption of news
- Enthusiasm for FiveThirtyEight and the journalism we create
- Proven track record in creating engaging social videos
- Some experience with Adobe Premiere. Candidates should be able to cut clips and add music
- Experience in scripting and storyboarding
- Camera experience (smartphone camera counts)
- Social writing experience
- Experience using WordPress or similar CMS to publish articles
- Experience in front of a camera (smartphone camera counts)

At the time of application, the applicant must be enrolled in an accredited college/university and have completed at least one class per semester/quarter prior to participating in the internship program, or the applicant must graduate from the college/university within six months. .
This internship is a paid remote internship and will run from May/June 2022 to January 2023. The candidate must be willing to work 40 hours per week ET for the duration of the internship.
