(Stills from Operation Barbarossa, known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War)
I warned that Russia felt on the defensive.. They believe that the West and NATO have united against them and encroached on their sovereignty. Pope Francis made similar comments when he said that Russia may have been “provoked” and invaded Ukraine as soon as they felt cornered with no way out.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently said he feared that NATO and the West were planning to eventually go to war with Russia. The European Union (EU) recently granted Ukraine candidate status after denying it entry for years. They know that after the war, Ukraine’s debt will be impossible without Russian reparations, which will likely cripple the Russian economy. The war would have ended a few months ago if the Western powers had not intervened and provided billions of dollars of funding. They are not just doing a good deed – there is a reason behind their participation.
Lavrov compared the situation to June 22, 1941, when Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was surprised by the attack, but Germany was not alone. Troops from Romania and Finland helped Germany invade, and later troops from Croatia, Hungary, Italy and Slovakia were brought in to fight all the way to the outskirts of Moscow.
“Hitler rallied under his banner a significant part, if not most, of the European peoples for the war against the Soviet Union,” Lavrov said. “[N]oh, The EU, together with NATO, are forming another – modern – coalition to confront and, ultimately, war with the Russian Federation. Everyone ignores these remarks simply because they cannot understand the comparison of the Jewish leader (Zelensky) to Hitler, despite the fact that Zelensky has been seen alongside contemporary Nazi coalitions.
History repeats itself.
