Wimbledon 2022: Serena Williams loses to Harmony Tan in first match in almost a year

Serena Williams miraculously returned to the court of Wimbledon almost a year after she was forced to leave the major due to a torn hamstring.

Williams’ return didn’t go as planned. On Tuesday, she lost to Harmony Tan in a three-set thriller. Tang defeated the great tennis player 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) on Center Court.

Williams waved to the crowd as she walked off the court.

It has been almost a year since Williams was forced to retire in an All England first round match due to injury. Since then, the 23-time Grand Slam champion has not played in a single match and she has come back against Tan.

Williams received a wildcard to enter the tournament. She won seven times at Wimbledon. Her loss to Tang was only the third first-round Grand Slam exit of her career.

Tang made her debut at Wimbledon. She finished 115th in the world and her best finish in any major was the second round.

The 24-year-old Paris native will now face No. 32 seed Sarah Sorribes Tormo, who beat American Christina McHale 6-2, 6-1.
