We are looking for a Junior Visual Journalist

FiveThirtyEight is looking for kind and creative Associate visual journalist to join our Interactives and Graphics team. This entry-level position is ideal for recent graduates and career changers as it offers immediate access to the experience and mentorship needed to become a successful member of the Interactives team. The day-to-day work mostly involves creating static diagrams, but the junior visual journalist will also have the opportunity to work on interactive content and occasionally submit their own work.

The Associate Visual Journalist will report to either Deputy Editor-in-Chief for Interactives and Graphicsor Senior Editor, Interactivesand work closely with the rest of the Interactives team, as well as reporters and newsroom editors. This permanent position with benefits is located in the United States. Since our offices are located in New York, we give preference to candidates who live in the New York area, but full-time remote work may be considered.

Responsibilities:

  • Create static and customized charts to accompany daily and feature stories under the supervision of editors or more senior visual journalists.
  • Contribute code and design to minor components of interactive projects as a sole contributor, or to larger components when working closely with more senior visual journalists.
  • Proactively learning any new technical skills and domain knowledge needed to succeed on every project.
  • Collaborate with the Interactives team and the rest of the newsroom by actively participating in routine workflows such as copy editing, reviewing articles, and project retrospectives.
  • Keeping employees and stakeholders informed of project status in a timely manner, including unexpected obstacles or delays
  • Giving and receiving candid feedback from peers, peers and supervisors

Main qualifications:

  • Passion for visualizing data and creating graphics that tell a clear story
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator
  • Some experience with front-end web development technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • The ability to balance timelines with the ability to experiment and create new ways to visualize sports and politics data.
  • Enthusiasm for working with other FiveThirtyEight journalists on their beats.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Deep understanding of US politics, especially electoral politics, major US sports and/or science.
  • Fluency in basic stats
  • Fluency in at least one programming language, ideally JavaScript
