Covid-19 update: South Africa reports 1,004 new cases and 16 deaths

South Africa has recorded 1,004 new cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, according to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NICD), reported on Monday.

This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 3,954,971, a 9.4% increase in the positivity rate.

There were also 16 Covid-related deaths, bringing the total death toll to 100,162.

Gauteng continued to report the highest number of cases, with 43% of cases coming from the province.

It is followed by KwaZulu-Natal (17%).

The Western Cape accounted for 16%; The Free State accounted for 8%; Mpumalanga accounted for 5%; The Eastern Cape and Northwest accounted for 4% each, respectively; The Northern Cape accounted for 2% and Limpopo for 1% of today’s new cases.

The institute said that since then, a total of 25,242,686 tests have been carried out in the public and private sectors.
