DUBAI, United Arab Emirates. At least three people were killed in an earthquake in southern Iran early Saturday morning, state television reported.
“Unfortunately, so far we have had three dead and eight injured,” Mehrdad Hasanzadeh, head of the Hormozgan province’s emergency department on the Persian Gulf coast, said in the report.
Iranian media reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1, while the European Mediterranean Seismological Center estimated it at 6.0. According to the European monitoring group, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers or just over six miles. The tremors were felt in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
Major fault lines cross Iran, which has been hit by several devastating earthquakes in recent years.
