VADNAIS HEIGHTS, Minnesota. – Officials found the bodies of three children and a mother from Lake Vadnays after a search began on Friday night in a triple murder and suicide case. All three children were under six years of age.
The last of the bodies was found on Saturday at 11 am. Two of the children were boys and the other was a girl.
The search began after Maplewood police said they received information about a potential homicide-suicide around 4:00 p.m., which they believe is connected to a suicide that occurred around 10:30 a.m. Friday around 1:00 p.m. on Pearson Drive.
Authorities responded to a welfare check at Lake Vadnays Regional Park where they found a car and children’s shoes.
The crew found the first child on Friday evening around 19:30. The second child was removed from the water around midnight and divers searched the area until 3:00 am. Rescue work resumed at 6:00 a.m., and the woman’s body was found at 10:40 a.m. At 11 am, a third child was pulled out of the lake. The bodies were found on the east side of the lake, Ramsey County Lance Sheriff Mike Martin said.
“Our hearts go out to the families involved and their friends,” he said. “Our goal was to find the children and the mother and return them to their families, and we’re glad we were able to do that.”
Several government agencies, volunteer detachments, a helicopter and several boats participated in the search. Head of the search and rescue squad, commander. Eric Bradt of the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office said the search was one of the toughest of his career.
“I’ve been doing this for 30 years as a cop… and it’s been one of the toughest,” he said.
The investigation is still active and ongoing. The bodies were taken to the medical examiner for further examination. Names are not disclosed.
