Saanich, British Columbia: 6 officers were wounded in a shootout outside a Canadian bank, two suspects were shot dead, police say.

The suspects were killed after a shootout with police near a bank in Saanich, according to Dean Duthy, Chief Constable of the Saanich Police Department.

No one was hurt inside the bank, Dati said, noting that it was one of the most violent scenes he had seen in his nearly 27 years of service in Saanich, a district municipality on Vancouver Island in Greater Victoria.

“What I know about this chaotic, tragic, dynamic, violent scene, that not a single citizen was harmed, is truly amazing,” Dati said.

Officers first arrived on the scene around 11 am after receiving word that two armed men had entered the bank.

The officers engaged the suspects near the bank, Dati said at a press conference. According to him, the suspects were heavily armed and, presumably, were wearing bulletproof vests.

During the clash, three officers from the Saanich Police Department and three from the Victoria Police Department were injured.

“A lot of shots were fired,” said Joan Flood, a Saanich resident who told CNN she was in her fourth-floor apartment across the street from the bank when the shooting took place.

Police gather at the scene of the shootout in Saanich, British Columbia, Tuesday.

“I heard the shot, I stood and turned around in the living room, and then I saw the police approaching the bank with weapons at the ready,” she said.

According to Flood, as the scene unfolded, she saw a man fall to the ground and couldn’t get up.

“While I was watching, a man came out from behind the shore, crouching, who definitely looked like he was in pain,” she said. “And they began to crawl, and then they lay down and stayed that way.”

The three wounded officers are expected to be discharged from the hospital, while three others are expected to undergo surgery for more serious injuries, Dati said on Tuesday.

He added that homes and businesses near the scene were evacuated due to a potential car bomb linked to the suspects.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police told CNN that they are assisting the Saanich police.
