As of Sunday, May 8, the total number of detected cases of Covid-19 in South Africa is 3,841,388, with 5,486 new cases.

This represents a 25.3% positive rate, according to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases.NICD).

Seven Covid-19-related deaths have been recorded, five of which occurred in the last 24-48 hours, bringing the total to 100,523.

There have been 43 hospitalizations in the last 24 hours.

The total number of recoveries is 3,679,053 with a 97% recovery rate. There are currently 61,812 active cases in South Africa.

A total of 24,675,963 tests have been conducted to date in both the public and private sectors.

The total number of vaccines introduced in the country as of May 7 is 35,124,794 vaccines.

Provincial breakdown

The majority of new Covid-19 cases have occurred in Gauteng (2213), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (1452) and the Western Cape (909).

This is followed by the Free State (280), while the North Western and Eastern Cape have 190 and 175 new cases, respectively.

The Northern Cape recorded 131 cases, followed by Mpumalanga (112) and Limpopo (22), which recorded the lowest number of cases in a day.
