Thunder rookie Chet Holmgren impresses with summer league debut; sets a record in the process

Chet Holmgren shone in his debut summer championship, scoring 13 of his 23 points in the first quarter to help Oklahoma City Thunder build an early 20-point lead en route to a 98-77 victory over the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night.

No. 2 pick in the draft there were also seven rebounds, four assists, and a Salt Lake City Summer League record of six blocks in 24 minutes. Holmgren, a versatile seven-footer from Gonzaga who averaged 14.1 points and 9.9 rebounds and ranked fourth nationally with 3.7 blocks per game, finished 7 of 9 from the floor and 5 of 5 on the free throw line throws.

Holmgren hit 4 of 5 shots in the first quarter, including three 3-pointers. He sat out the first six minutes of the second quarter before finding Jalen Williams to dunk to make it 42-22. Holmgren made six shots in a row, missing on his first try.

Jalen Williams, no. 12 picks from Santa Clara, added 17 points to help Oklahoma City ruin new debut Utah coach Will Hardy. Josh Giddy scored 14 points and 11 assists.

Oklahoma City closed the third quarter 10-0 and 78-50.

ZAR 94, WARRIORS 70

Serbian forward Nikola Jovic scored 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds on the third day of the California Classic in San Francisco.

Jovic, number 1. 27th overall pick, 5 of 7 from 3-pointers and 9 of 16 overall. His six rebounds were offensive, which helped Heat to edge 47-23 on glass. Jovic played for Mega Basket in the Serbian league, averaging 11.7 points on 43% shooting in that league last season.

“I’m just happy we won,” said the 6ft 11in Jovic. “My game, you know, I’ve worked all my life to play here (NBA) and I’ve succeeded.”

Guy Santos, selected golden state with the 55th number scored 12 points and five assists. The striker of the Brazilian league “Novo Basquete” with a score of 6-8 showed the score 3:3 from a distance.

KINGS 87, LECKERS 75

No. 4th pick Keegan Murray scored 16 of his 24 points in the second half, and Sacramento finished the California Classic undefeated after defeating Los Angeles.

Murray, the Big Ten’s leading scorer with 23.5 points per game, also had seven rebounds and three steals. He was 9 of 16 from the field, including 2 or 4 from threes.

Max Christie, Michigan State guard, selected 35th overall, had five points and eight rebounds. Los Angeles. Christie, a 6-foot shooter and cornerback who left East Lansing after just one season, was 1 of 6 off the field.

GRIZZLY 103, 76ERS 99

Jake LaRavia, no. 19 picked from Wake Forest, made four Memphis 15 three-pointers and the Grizzlies won Game 1 in Salt Lake City.

Memphis leads by a whopping 17 points. The Grizzlies hit 7 of 9 3-pointers in the first quarter and finished 15 of 30. Memphis also made 29 assists on 37 field goals made.

Philadelphia the ball was down 101-99 with 15 seconds left, but Jayden Springer stole it to Kennedy Chandler. Zier Williams completed two free throws with 0.1 seconds left.

No. No. 23 David Roddy, a 6-6, 255-pound forward from Colorado State, scored four points for Memphis. Roddy was Mountain West Player of the Year, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists last season.

Paul Reid led Philadelphia with 20 points and 15 rebounds.

Memphis star Ja Morant was seated by the court.
