Barcelona label De Jong ‘not for sale’

Barcelona president Joan Laporta said on Wednesday that Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong is not for sale despite rumors of a Premier League move.

De Jong “is a Barça player and if we don’t have the need or interest to sell him, we don’t want to sell him,” Laporta said as the club unveiled new signing Frank Kessy.

“We know he has offers. If at some point we were interested in it, we would consider it, but now we are not selling the player, ”Laporta insisted.

De Jong, 25, is closely linked with a move to Manchester United and a reunion with former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, who is gearing up for his first season at Old Trafford.

Laporta said the club had made an offer to French international Ousmane Dembele, whose contract with Barça expired at the end of June.

“Ousman is no longer a Barça player, but we made him an offer,” Laporta said. “He hasn’t accepted it yet, but wants to keep communicating.

“We’re going to keep talking, at least for now.”

Laporta also admitted to having lunch with Jorge Mendes, an agent for Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who is reportedly looking to leave Manchester United.

“We discussed the transfer market in general, but I won’t elaborate if he spoke to me about the player in particular,” Laporta said.
