Stellenbosch have added a German touch to their squad by signing former Borussia Dortmund defender Lasse Sobiech.
Sobech, along with Sikhle Nduli, William Likuta, Sinetemba Mngomezulu, Nhlankhla Mgaga and Wusi Sibia, were introduced by the club on Wednesday.
Head coach Steve Barker says the club needed to bring in new faces, especially after parting ways with several players.
He believes that the former Dortmund defender will bring some leadership qualities to the club.
“Given the number of players who have left the club, we have to sort of attract new players in order to continue to develop the team. We have signed several players from different areas. We brought Sobiech, a player from Germany,” said the Stellenbosch coach.
“A good ball playing as a centre-back, very strong in the air, he will bring a kind of leadership with a strong mentality to the club. Like Sibia, left central defender. Around last year, he competed in the Kosaf Cup. We also believe that he has the abilities and qualities that we require in this position.”
The club had a decent campaign in the DStv premier league last season, manager Stellies says it’s vital for the club to maintain stability.
“We are looking forward to the new season, obviously it has been a good season. The challenge is to maintain this consistency and continue to strengthen our position. You know it’s a very competitive league. I think everyone is energized and we are ready to hit the road,” he added.
