Shell to build Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen plant

Plans to build a large hydrogen plant in the Netherlands will come to fruition after a final investment decision has been made by the oil and gas giant’s subsidiaries. shell.

In a statement Wednesday, Shell said the Holland Hydrogen I facility will be “Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen plant” when it goes online in 2025.

According to Shell, the 200 megawatt electrolyzer will be located at the Port of Rotterdam, Europe’s largest seaport, producing up to 60,000 kg of renewable hydrogen every day.

Hydrogen has a wide range of applications and can be used in a wide variety of industries. It can be made in several ways. One method involves the use of electrolysis, in which water is split by an electric current into oxygen and hydrogen.

If the electricity used in this process comes from a renewable source such as wind or solar, then some refer to it as “green” or “renewable” hydrogen.

Shell said the pot in the Netherlands will use renewable energy from the Hollandse Kust (noord) offshore wind farm, a 759 MW project due to come online in 2023. Shell is a co-owner of the wind farm.

The hydrogen produced by the plant will be sent to Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam via a new hydrogen pipeline called HyTransPort.

The idea is that this renewable hydrogen will “replace some of the gray hydrogen” that is produced using the fossil fuels used at the facility. “This will partially decarbonize the production of energy products such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel,” Shell said.

In a statement, Anna Mascolo, who is executive vice president of new energy solutions at Shell, said that renewable hydrogen “will play a key role in the energy system of the future and this project is an important step in helping hydrogen realize that potential. “
