Chippa United confirmed on Friday that they have placed Kurt Lentjes on “special leave” as they continue to search for a new head coach to take over as DStv Eastern Cape premier.
“This indicates that Chippa United are still in the process of discussing a vacancy for the head coach position,” club chairman Sivive Mpengezi said in a statement.
“After the departure of coach Gavin Hunt, the club did not fill the vacancy on a permanent basis. During this period, the player Kurt Lentjes acted as coach.
Considering the way forward as head coach, conducting interviews, etc., and allowing the process to proceed in the most honest way, the club decided to appoint Kurt Lentjes, who is naturally interested in this matter, on a special leave.
“The club will release a statement once a decision is made on how to proceed.”
While this announcement may seem to give Lentjes some hope that he will still get the full-time head coaching role, the decision looks set to see him step down.
Lentjes took over in November 2021 after Chippa suspended head coach Gavin Hunt due to a poor start to the 2021/22 campaign. Hunt subsequently parted ways with Chippa and Lentjes ultimately helped the team avoid relegation, finishing 14th in the table.
