Daniel Oss: Cyclist pulls out of Tour de France after breaking his neck in a high-speed collision with a fan

A Team TotalEnergies rider crashed into fans at high speed as they lined up along a cobbled street during Stage 5 between Lille and Arenberg.

The footage shows Oss losing his balance after cutting off one fan and then colliding with another who leaned over to film the race on his phone.

“Additional examinations revealed a cervical vertebral fracture requiring immobilization for several weeks,” the team said in a statement. read.

“Therefore, Daniel Oss is forced to leave the Tour de France… The whole team wishes you well, Daniel.”

During Stage 5 on Wednesday, there were a number of crashes, though not all serious ones, as the riders raced over the cobblestones.

The Italian rider was somehow able to finish the stage despite a crash that also involved two other riders who fell behind him.

During last year’s race, a fan made major accident after standing in front of a racing backpack with a cardboard sign that appeared to display a message to the TV cameras. The woman in question was subsequently identified and arrested by the authorities.

Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia is now the overall leader of the Tour after winning Stage 6.
