Did the chiefs close the checkbook after the release of new players’ team numbers?

The Kaizer Chiefs kept up with their stylish style in everything they did when they unveiled their new players’ numbers on Friday afternoon.

However, fans will be worried about whether this means the club has closed its checkbook and won’t be bringing in new players.

Chiefs released 13 players at the end of last season when they went through a difficult period that resulted in the sacking of then coach Stuart Baxter.

Artur Zvane has since been appointed as the new man who will bring Naturena’s side back to their former glory days.

But despite excitement over a regime change at the Chiefs that has seen Kaiser Motaung Jr take a more active role at the club as sporting director, there are still areas that some say are not being strengthened enough.

Having fired their two strikers in Samir Nurkovic and Leonardo Castro, the Soweto giants have remained weak up front with only Ashley Du Preez joining them so far.

The Chiefs are expected to bring in at least two more forwards to increase competition for front row seats. But Zvane could have used Hama Billiat and Keegan Dolly as strikers rather than attacking midfielders.

Exciting and technical midfielder Kamohelo Mahlatsi will play at No. 1.5 at Amahoshi after signing with neighboring Soweto Swallows FC.

Zita Hvinika, a defender who joined from Stellenbosch, will wear the number 1.4, previously worn by long-time Daniel Cardoso, who was among those dropped by the club.

Sietemba Sitebe, whose signing with Amazulu in January caused such controversy that he was later barred from playing for the Durban team, will wear number N0. 6 jersey.

This number was used by Kirin Bakkus last season, but was made famous by Reneilve “Yeye” Letsholonyane, who also coincidentally wore dreadlocks like Sitebe. Bakk was also among those released.

All-rounder Dillon Solomons, who signed from Swallows, will wear the #1.18 last used by Kgotso Moleko. Midfield strongman Lechlogonolo Matlow will wear the No. 1.22 jersey last worn by Filani Zulu.

And the chief signing of the Chiefs for now, Du Prez will wear the No. 1. 9 used by Nurkovic, who was released and has since joined Royal AM.
