Wimbledon, England. Elena Rybakina beat Once Jabert to win the Wimbledon singles title on Saturday, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, giving the Russian-born and raised player the sport’s most prestigious championship just over two months after tournament. the organizers did not allow players representing Russia to participate.
Rybakina, who began representing Kazakhstan four years ago after the former Soviet republic agreed to fund her career, got the better of Zhaber, who stumbled and succumbed to inconsistency after taking an early lead.
Rybakina was initially nervous and shaky, missed seemingly easy rally balls for a long time and struggled to get her dangerous first serve on the court, but as the match dragged on she calmed down. Once she found her rhythm, Jaber had few answers. She had a chance to draw even in the third set as Rybakina trailed 0-40, serving at 3-2, but Zhaber couldn’t finish the game and from there Rybakina crossed the finish line.
In the final stage, Rybakina watched as Jabeur sent a final backhand from the left and went to the net with little to no celebration.
