Tensions between world leaders remained elevated on Friday during negotiations with G20 countries to Bali, Indonesia, as leading economies seek to solve the biggest problems facing the world.

Differences between western countries and the increasingly united Sino-Russian front have highlighted sharp divisions and brought to naught effective diplomacy when it came to issues related to the war in Ukraine.

Russia Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov Walked out of the meeting twice, reportedly on Friday, first when his German counterpart Annalena Berbock began to speak, and again when Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba appeared on video.

PUTIN SAYS RUSSIA’S MEETING IN UKRAINE JUST BEGINS

This week’s talks were supposed to set the stage for a summit to be held in Indonesia in November, but troubled diplomatic relations have set an uncertain tone for the upcoming conference.

“The world has not yet recovered from the pandemic, but we are already facing another crisis: the war in Ukraine,” said Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi. “The ripple effect is being felt around the world on food, energy and physical space.”

However, officials apparently decided to show their disinterest in cooperating with Russia while the country continues its war in Ukraine, and said there would be no joint communiqué, as in previous years.

Western officials apparently assumed they were focusing on tackling food and energy shortages, which had become a major problem. global problem after Moscow’s invasion and stated that they would work towards concluding bloc agreements to counter growing global crises.

However, the tone of the talks did not come as a surprise after the stops made by Western countries and officials from Russia and China ahead of the G20 meeting in Bali.

Lavrov, along with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, reportedly stopped by several Asian capitals to rally support for his position and strengthen shared ties.

Blinken, along with his German, French and British colleagues, met for several months and attended NATO and G7 conferences last week.

The Indonesian host tried to curb the hostilities by reminding everyone present that the world was facing a huge crisis that would be devastating if left unaddressed.

Emerging G20 countries such as Argentina, Brazil, India and Indonesia could also face severe consequences if relations between the West remain strained with Russia and China.

“Honestly, we can’t deny that it has become harder for the world to sit together,” Marsudi said. “The world is watching us so we can’t fail.”

On Friday, reports surfaced that Western countries refused to attend Thursday night’s group dinner after learning that Lavrov would be attending.

The regular group photo was also dropped as a result of a boycott allegedly led by Blinken and members of the G7, according to a Politico EU report.

Lavrov reportedly became angry when asked about the missed group photo shoot and told reporters, “I didn’t invite anyone to pose for a photo with me.”

“Obviously they used the G20 for purposes that were not foreseen when it was created,” he said.
