Shortly thereafter, England went on the attack again, with fifth-eighth Marcus Smith making a cut pass to Tommy Freeman on the left flank in the 21st minute.

But Perese intervened, frantically jumping to the right with his arm outstretched and missing his chance to intercept, much to the dismay of the Australian fans.

However, an uproar echoed through the hall after the 25-year-old was given a yellow card for an intentional hit, leaving the Wallabies with 14 men for 10 minutes.

“It’s not clear and intentional,” former All Black Andrew Mertens told Stan Sport.

“I absolutely disagree with that.”

Australian legend Tim Horan continued: “I’m not sure what else you should be doing.

“There is no movement to kick this ball, he is trying to drag it.

“It’s an absurdity that we’re seeing at the moment, it’s just that common sense doesn’t apply to some decisions.”

To rub salt in the wound, star centre-forward Owen Farrell converted a penalty to increase England’s lead to 16-0.

Injured Wallabies winger Andrew Kellaway is furious: “What is he supposed to do? He goes after the ball. As a fan, I don’t want to see that. The only people who seem happy about it are England.”

Luckily, the Wallabies were able to get a try before half time, with support Taniel Tupou scoring Australia’s first point in the 36th minute.

England returned to the barns with a 19-7 lead.

Previously, The Wallabies were showered with praise for singing the Australian National Anthem in Yugambe in recognition of NAIDOC Week.
