Garfield’s motto in football this season: “No excuses”

In 2022, the Garfield football team has nothing to fool around with. As coach Lorenzo Hernandez put it, “No excuses” is what he’s been going through since his team lost to rival Roosevelt last season and lost in the first round of the City Section’s Open Division playoffs 8-3.

In 2021, the Bulldogs played many young players and brought back 15 starting players. Hernandez is counting on that experience and the memory of his loss to Roosevelt in the East LA Classic for motivation. This year’s East LA Classic will be held at the Coliseum on October 10th. 21.

But Garfield is far more ambitious than just focusing his season on playing Roosevelt.

Quarterback Damian Cabrera will have a veteran offensive line as well as talented wide receiver Jayden Barnes, a basketball player who was also the offensive MVP last season. Damian Cornejo came close to running 1,000 yards as a sophomore, and Robert Sanchez was also an influence on the freshman running back. Julian Samudio led the team in tackles and also returned for his junior season.

Joshua Estrada and James Estrada (no relation) are both defensive players and are expected to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

The Bulldogs open the season with a tough game against the Cathedral in August. 19.
