New Big 12 commissioner says conference is ‘open for business’ when it comes to expansion

In the coming years, college athletics will look very different, and new NCAA Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark understands this very well.

At Big 12 Media Days, Jormark was asked about the possible addition of teams from the Pac-12 conference, two weeks after USC and UCLA announced their move to the Big Ten conference in 2024.

“As I said in my opening comments, we are exploring all options,” Jormark said on Wednesday. “And we are open for business. And optionality is good, and we test them all. I think it’s fair to say that I received a lot of phone calls, a lot of interest. We are studying these levels. of interest. Nothing is foreseen.”

Following the news from Los Angeles, Pac-12 also said they wanted to expand.

“The Pac-12 Board of Directors met this morning and authorized the Conference to explore all expansion options,” Pac-12 tweeted. “10 rectors and university presidents remain committed to the common mission of academic and athletic excellence on behalf of our student athletes.”

College athletics is moving towards having two superconferences in the SEC and the Big Ten, with Texas and Oklahoma moving from the Big 12 to the SEC in 2025. The addition of USC and UCLA to the Big Ten changed college football landscape as schools try to position themselves by moving forward.

ARCH MANNING ANNOUNCES THIS COMMITMENT

While the Big 12 will lose Oklahoma and Texas in the next few years, four schools will be added to the conference in 2023, with BYU, UCF, Houston, and Cincinnati joining the conference.

Jormark also discussed the new era of name, image, and likeness (NIL), stating that he is in favor of players making a profit from their brands.

“I can say at a high level that I am a supporter of the NIL,” Jormark said. told reporters on Wednesday. “I kind of got my feet wet at Roc Nation where we competed in NIL. From a personal point of view [I] didn’t really talk to our key stakeholders about it. I think there should be barriers. Perhaps there should be uniformity. And perhaps the conference should play a bigger role in how NIL moves forward.”
