Hyundai is considering a new model, but with a twist

The automaker has ignored the lucrative passenger car market for decades, but a change of heart could see it overtake its best-selling rivals.

Hyundai won’t invest in a dual-cab diesel car to compete with the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger, saying it “doesn’t make any sense” to develop new cars with internal combustion engines.

But an electric alternative to the Ford F-150 Lightning, Chevrolet Silverado EV, Rivian R1T and Tesla Cybertruck is being considered in the future.

Talking to the Australian media at the global opening Hyundai Ioniq 6 electric carr, Thomas Shemera, vice president of products and planning for the manufacturer, said Hyundai could have an electric pickup in its plans.

“We have a lot of things in development,” he said.

“Nothing has been confirmed yet. But I can imagine that if there is a way to showcase and compose such cars, for example, for Australia or the USA, we will do it.”

Hyundai Australia has been looking for a rival to the Ranger and HiLux for more than a decade.

The brand sells the compact duck in America. Known as the Santa Cruz, it uses the same equipment as the Tucson SUV and cannot match the one-ton payload or 3.5-ton towing capacity of Australian double cab vehicles.

Shemera says the Australian staff never stopped asking for the proper ute.

“I have had many, many discussions with the Australian market and I know there is a lot of demand for this and I really respect that,” he said.

“But to start developing cars on ICE [internal combustion engine] base doesn’t make any sense.

Hyundai is throwing its significant resources into electric and hydrogen fuel cell technology going forward. The brand is expected to reveal additional elements of its electrification plan in the coming days.

Schemera says electrical technology gives the brand the opportunity to try new things.

“We already have ideas on how to do it, but nothing has been decided yet,” he said.

“Let’s see.”
