Icasa Council elects Acting Chairman

The Council of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has announced the appointment of Dr. Charlie Lewis as Acting Chairman.

Lewis’s appointment runs from July 16, 2022 to April 3, 2023, or until a chairman is appointed in accordance with the Iqas Law.

“The appointment of Councilor Lewis comes as Icasa says goodbye to outgoing chairmanDr. Keabetswe Modimoeng, whose last day in office is today,” the regulator said.

He noted that the Icasa Law provides for an acting chairperson, stating: “In the absence of a chairperson, the remaining members of the council shall, from among themselves, elect an acting chairperson who, while he or she is in office, may perform all the functions of chairperson.”

Ikasa said that Lewis has extensive experience in the policy and regulation of the ICT sector, from telecommunications to broadcasting.

“His knowledge and experience covers a wide range of key areas, including universal access and service, consumer protection, statistics collection and analysis, spectrum management and the fourth industrial revolution,” said Ikasa.

“The Authority looks forward to working with Dr. Lewis as Acting Chairman.”
