Wildfires swept southern Spain due to extreme heat

Wildfires continued to burn in southern Spain on Friday, July 15, amid heatwaves across Western Europe. A video posted by Twitter user @JoseMSantiagoD, who said it was filmed in the coastal town of Alhaurín de la Torre, Malaga, shows thick plumes of smoke over the Sierra de Mijas mountains on Friday. By Friday afternoon, Andalusian officials announced a Level 1 contingency plan due to a fire in the El Higueron Mountains region and urged caution. During the week, temperatures were at least 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in many parts of Spain, Portugal, France and Greece, leading EU emergency management agency Copernicus to issue a July 15 warning of an “extreme fire danger” in the south Europe.
