Open Championship 2022: Cam Smith wins first major title after incredible final round

Cam Smith was four strokes behind the leader going into the fourth round. Open Championship on Sunday and you had to do two things: hit almost every shot and hope Rory McIlroy and Victor Hovland got it wrong just enough to get him back in the lead and win it all.

What happened was nothing short of a miracle considering how hot it is. McIlroy and Hovland was the whole tournament. Smith fully recovered after hitting 73 in the third.

Smith hit eight birdies in the final round, par 10 and a save on the 17th hole.

He didn’t make a single hole. He shot 64 in the final round. This was the second time he had scored 64 in the tournament. He did it in the second round on Friday as well.

This was Smith’s first major tournament win. He came close at the 2020 Masters finishing second.

ESPN Stats & Info recounted several key milestones associated with Smith’s incredible St. Andrews. He was the only player in the last 20 years to hit a birdie on the first five holes in the last nine final rounds of any major golf tournament. Smith also became the first player since Phil Mickelson in 2013 to come back to win the Open by four strokes.

McIlroy shared the lead in the final round and didn’t flinch too much to lose the lead. He never punched a hole in the final round, and fixed only two birds. He finished with a final round of 70, resulting in a third-place finish in the Open. He was 18 at the tournament.

Cameron Young took second place thanks to an eagle on the 18th hole. He finished the tournament with a score of 19 below par. It was his best golf result to date. Earlier this year, he finished third in the PGA Championship.
