Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was assassinated last week while campaigning in Nara Prefecture, has received a number of rare awards from the Japanese Imperial Family.

Abe was a powerful ally of the Japanese imperial family, firmly supporting their role in Japanese culture and refusing to budge on the various proposed reforms of the institution.

The Japanese government announced on July 11 that Abe will receive the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum, the highest award of the whole country.

“This is recognition of his many years of career and accomplishments, including his efforts in diplomacy, economics, and security policy, with a particular focus on Japan-US relations.” said Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno.

The Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum is an order headed and presided over by the Emperor of Japan. It is usually only awarded to members of the imperial family, foreign heads of state, and members of the royal family from other countries. The award is also given exclusively to men.

Members of the Supreme Order receive a decorative collar to wear on special occasions – the chain is made of solid gold and adorned with finely engraved floral decorations.

The chrysanthemum is an ancient symbol of the Imperial family and serves as the coat of arms of the Emperor.

Abe was also awarded the first junior court rank, a posthumous honor dating back to ancient Japanese nobility.

After World War II, senior first rank awards were functionally discontinued and not hereditary, meaning that Abe received the highest award currently used by the Imperial Family. Since 1945, only respected prime ministers received honor.

Abe is the country’s first leader born after World War II. Longest-serving Prime Minister of Japan. He served from 2006 to 2007 and again in 2012 until he retired in 2020 after his ulcerative colitis, a chronic condition, surfaced, calling his decision at the time “wrenching.”

Abe’s enormous success in office is reflected in the dominance of his Liberal Democratic Party, Japan’s centre-right political party and the most powerful institution in Japanese democracy today.
