Minnetonka assistant fire chief Jim Flanders has died after being found unconscious in a home.

Minnetonka, Minnesota. – Minnetonka assistant fire chief Jim Flanders has died after being found unconscious in his home on Saturday, city officials said.

First responders took life-saving action in Flanders and he was taken to hospital, but was later pronounced dead. He was 59 years old and officials said his death was the result of a medical emergency.

“My heart is broken because of Jim’s family and our firefighting family. The loss of one of our brothers is devastating,” Minnetonka Fire Chief John Vance said. “He has always been at his post, helping our community prepare for and deal with emergencies.”

Flanders served with the Minnetonka Fire Department for many years, and in 2021 received the Spirit of Minnetonka award, given to city worker of the year.

The fire department said more information will be provided once plans for the Flanders memorial are completed.
