As the saying goes goes, the celebrities pre-record the anniversary video and God laughs.
So this goes for Chelsea Handler and Jo Coy, who announced on Tuesday that she is ending her collaboration after captivating us all with her unexpected love story born from years of friendship.
“It’s with a heavy heart that we’ve decided together that it’s best for us to take a break from our relationship right now,” Handler wrote, along with a video the two comedians planned to share on their upcoming anniversary.
“I know that many of you were invested in our love and I wanted to express to you how much it means to both of us,” she continued. “How much it still means. And how much I now believe in love for each of us.
The former talk show host went on to praise Coy for everything about how she was “forever changed” by his love, calling him “one of the greatest gifts of my life.”
“He revived my faith in men, in love, in being 100% who I am, and I’ve never been so optimistic about the future,” Handler continued. “You blew my creativity, my thirst to work hard again, to be on the road again, and you reminded me of who I was and always have been, and my feet have never been so firmly planted in the ground.”
Handler assured her followers that while their romantic relationship may be coming to an end, this new stage in their lives is just “another beginning.”
“It is comforting to know that I am still loved and that I love this man as the sun loves the moon and the moon loves the sun. YOUR MAN is coming,” she concluded. “So please keep rooting for both of us because you never know what life will bring.”
Although Handler seemingly closed the door on the romance, an unnamed source said. People that the ex-couple’s friends “hope this is a temporary situation” and that they “can still deal with it”.
Coy echoed Handler’s feelings in his post, insisting that the pair “will always remain great friends and will always love each other.”
“I’m her biggest fan and I can’t wait for you all to see what she has in store for the future,” he wrote alongside a photo of himself and Handler. “Keep killing, Chelsea! Waving a whale!”
After months of speculation, Handler for the first time confirmed that her friendship with Koi grew into a relationship back in September before making Instagram official. A month later, these two debuted on the red carpet as a couple at the 2021 People’s Choice Awards.
Before beginning their romance, Coy and Handler spent almost 20 years in each other’s orbit after being introduced by comedian Jon Lovitz, and then often worked together on the late-night E! talk show Chelsea Lately.
Shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic, the duo reunited when Coy asked Handler to write a synopsis for his book, which led to text messaging and face-to-face meetings.
“If I fell in love at 46, I have hope for every person in this world,” Handler said of Coe. while performing on The Tonight Show last year. “One day I just looked at him and thought: “Oh, this is my guy!” So he’s like my best friend, and then I also, you know, have sex with him… Fun times!”
She added, “So if you have a friend in your life that you think you don’t like or aren’t attracted to, just remember my story and be open-minded.”
