YouX: Adelaide Universities Union Renames Porn Site

The university’s 127-year-old student union has come under fire for a “dystopian” rebrand that removed any mention of the “union” while taking on the same name as the porn site.

The Adelaide Universities Union, founded in 1895, sparked outrage from current and former students after changing its name to “YouX”, allegedly referring to “user experience”. in Adelaide Advertiser reports.

student newspaper On babypublished by the AUU reported that the name was “Google-tagged” as a result of using the same name as an X-rated site.

The rebrand also reportedly went against the advice of University of Adelaide marketing director Dr. Benjamin Grindley, who warned last year that it could lead to a loss of “credibility and prestige” and a “loss or break with the positive associations and sentiments that exist for to AUU.

“Welcome to YouX,” the organization’s Facebook page said on Monday.

“As a student service provider, your student experience is our top priority, and our new name helps us make you the center of our brand.”

When AUU changed its Facebook profile to YouX last week, comments were overwhelmingly negative, with people calling the rebrand “shameful” and “terrible.”

“When you can’t be called a union because then people can expect you to protect their rights,” wrote one person.

Another said: “What nonsense? My God, uni is a shell of what it was if AUU couldn’t accept being called a union. Where is the common sense?! I thought the page had been hacked and I was ready to delete it. Looks like the bot has taken over! You can’t completely change the name to some weird dystopian “meta name” to appease dropouts. Union and proud!

A third wrote: “The right will literally spend ??? sums for an unnecessary rebranding instead of being a union for students.

A fourth added: “Imagine being a university union for over 125 years and then changing your name because some thugs are a little intimidated by the word union. Well done buddies.”

One said it “looks and sounds like a consulting company” while another said it “sounds like a cult”. “I actually had to look through your page to find out it was a student union rebrand,” wrote another. Thought it was some kind of MLM [multi-level marketing] FB Page Capture.

The AUU board was also accused of dismantling the Student Representative Council earlier this year. The SRC said it was “deeply concerned” about the rebranding.

“We believe that there was no real student consultation with AUU members about this rebranding, as well as a potentially unreasonable price,” they said in May.

“We are concerned that this rebranding is politically motivated and is only being carried out due to the desire of the AUU board members to remove the worldwide ‘union’.

Last week, On baby wrote that despite denies that the name change was politically motivated, “the politics and large-scale political implications cannot be separated from the abandonment of the deep and historical word union.”

“The removal of the word ‘union’ is an unfortunate defeat for all students and staff of the university,” the newspaper wrote.

“Yes, while some basic services remain, students are left without the knowledge and ease of taking matters into their own hands with the combined power. Students, especially prospective students, face the risk of losing their strength for self-determination and their ability to fight.”

This was announced by the representative of YouX. Adelaide Advertiser reviews of the rebrand have “so far been overwhelmingly positive”.

“We have not been told of any instances where students have come across inappropriate content using our name as a search phrase, and all tests to date have failed to produce unsafe search results,” he said.

“Indexing new sites may take some time (up to a week) and interim search results may be mixed, but once completed, we believe YouX search and search will be simple and user friendly.”

A spokesperson did not disclose the cost of the rebrand due to “commercial confidentiality” concerns, but said it was funded by the profits of “commercial organizations” rather than student service fees.

YouX has been contacted for further comments.
