“It was a joy for me to know that no matter what the character went through, he would not end up with a lady. I could just have fun.”

Persuasion director Carrie Cracknell shed light on Golding’s “brilliant” take on the character, which ultimately convinced her to cast him.

“It just seemed to me that Henry had an incredible combination of charisma, intelligence, confidence and wit, which seemed so fresh to the Jane Austen story,” she said. People. “I had a brilliant conversation with him and he was thrilled with the opportunity to play Mr. Black. Elliot.
