The Albanian government released a report on the former government’s decision to publicize the arrival of a boat carrying asylum seekers on federal election day in May.
Reports show that the Morrison government pressured Border Patrol officers, Australian Department of Defense officials and the Home Office to violate democratic protocols.
Home Secretary Claire O’Neill says they have put political interests ahead of national interests and should apologize to the Australian public.
“The former government had a duty to protect Australians; instead, their actions on Election Day fundamentally undermined our democracy,” she said at a press conference on Saturday afternoon.
“They undermined the integrity of an operation that is complex, dangerous and halfway through.”
