Mamelodi Sundowns coach Surprise Moriri says he needs to work on strengthening his team and filling in the gaps after the team finished third in the DStv Diski Shield.
Moriri’s men beat Chippa United 4-2 on penalties after the teams drew 2-2 at Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammarsdale on Saturday.
“For us, the Diski Shield had to fill in the gaps after last season. So, next season we will have a couple of new players, but we still want to strengthen the team,” said Moriri.
“You could see in the first and second half and also on the bench that we need more attacking midfielders and centre-backs. We played with Matlow as a centre-back… the game gave us a clear idea of where we are as a team.”
Meanwhile, outgoing reserve manager Chippa Dane Kleit praised his team for a fantastic 2021/22 season.
Although his team lost the game, Kleit, who will coach the first team of the Chilli Boys next campaign, believes his team represented the Eastern Cape well.
“I think it was a fantastic result for the boys this season, they finished fourth in the league and fourth in the Diski Shield. To be able to compete against these teams, your Stellenbosch, your Kaizer Chiefs, your Sundowns, there are many differences,” Chippa said.
“We have local guys and they have the luxury of hiring players from other provinces. We don’t have that luxury, but I think that if you go out on the field, you will never see such things. The boys tried hard and worked hard and represented the Eastern Cape so well.”
