NASA selects SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy for its $225 million Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope.

Elon MuskX SpaceX was awarded NASA contract for launch services for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope mission, which will explore the mysteries of dark energy and dark matter, as well as search for new exoplanets.

The contract is considered an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract because the mission itself is currently targeting a 2026 launch on a Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

NASA’s total cost to launch the Rome Telescope is approximately $255 million, including launch services and other mission-related costs.

The telescope’s program will include special studies to address a number of unresolved issues in cosmology, including the effects of dark energy and dark matter, about which scientists know very little, and the study of exoplanets. Blog post.

The telescope, formerly known as the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), was later renamed in honor of Dr. J. Nancy Grace Roman for her outstanding work at NASA that paved the way for large space telescopes.

Nancy Grace Roman was NASA’s first female CEO and the agency’s first head of the agency’s astronomy department in the 1960s and 70s, playing a pivotal role in the planning process for the Hubble Space Telescope.

As a scholar, she has been well published, including one paper on the fundamental structure of the galaxy, which was named by the Astrophysical Journal as one of the 100 most important papers of the last century.

During her time at NASA, Roman developed and prepared budgets for a number of programs and organized their scientific participation.

In fact, prior to the introduction of peer review, which brought in outside experts, Roman was the only person to accept or reject proposals for NASA astronomy projects based on merit and her own knowledge.

In 1963, when entry into the astronaut corps was restricted to men, Roman said in a speech, “I believe there will be female astronauts someday, just as there are female aircraft pilots,” according to the Annual Review of Astronomy and Physics. .

NASA’s Kennedy Launch Program is responsible for managing the SpaceX launch service launch program.
