Bob Baffert opens Del Mar’s summer meeting with two wins

Hall of Fame Coach Bob Baffert Takes Two Wins in Opening Weekend Summer Meeting Del Marthree weeks after his 90-day suspension ended.

Havnameltdown won by 2 1/4 lengths in his first career start in Sunday’s $80,000 Race 4 at the Seaside track north of San Diego. The two-year-old foal is owned by longtime Baffert clients Mike Pegram, Carl Watson and Paul Weightman.

On Saturday, Baffert won a $16,000 race with a 3-year-old Sumo foal.

They are among 45 horses sent by Baffert from his training base in Santa Anita near Los Angeles. He did not race in any of the profitable betting races on the first weekend of the meeting, which started on Friday.

On Saturday, Taiba finished second, heading over Baffert in the $1 million Haskell Invitational. Monmouth Park in New Jersey.

Baffert’s lengthy suspension by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission ended on July 2.

He took his first win since returning to the Los Alamitos Derby a week later for $125,000.

In April, Baffert began serving a suspension for a failed drug test after a race with Medina Spirit taking first place in the race. 2021 Kentucky Derby and was later disqualified. Baffert was not allowed on the grounds at any track, and his horses were handed over to other trainers in his absence.

In June, the New York Racing Association suspended Baffert for one year for repeated drug violations, although none of them happened in New York. This punishment, which banned him from Saratoga, Belmont, and the Aqueduct, ends in January. 26.

The two-time Triple Crown winner remains under a two-year ban at Churchill Downs, which will keep him out of the Kentucky Derby for two years. He is suing the Louisville track to have it cancelled.
