In the nominal middle of the Japanese baseball season, COVID-19, and not Munetaka Murakami or any other star to be featured during this week’s All-Star Series, is taking center stage.

The seventh wave of infections in Japan is taking its toll on the ranks of the NPB, pushing back various players and staff – even Hokkaido Nippon Ham’s big boss, Tsuyoshi Shinjou – wasn’t immune – and wiping out the giants of Yomiuri.
