What’s in the water at Palm Beach Currumbin SHS when it comes to linebacker training?

NRL fans have seen former students Tom Dearden (Cowboys) and Toby Sexton (Titans) break into the big leagues as playmakers, and they’ll soon see Tom Weaver (Titans) break into the NRL this or next season.

Looming on the horizon is another young playmaker, half Queensland schoolboy Josh Lynn, who will be front and center tonight’s local Langer Trophy derby live between two Gold Coast teams, PBC and Keebra Park SHS.

Lynn said she was coached by Tim McCann and Brad Davis (both QRL playmakers), as well as high school coaches Chris and Rod Patison, which was one of the reasons for the PBC SHS halves’ conveyor belt of talent.

But he said the hands-on experience of training and playing with Weaver was enormous, noting Weaver’s “communicative” skills and his ability to manage a team.

“In training, I just followed him, trying to learn as much as possible and take it into my arsenal,” said Lynn, who loves to surf in Burley Beach.

Weaver, a product of Cudgen, recently starred in New South Wales Under 19, winning at number 6.

Lynn said the loss of Weaver and Oscar Bryant after consecutive seasons on PBC SHS (2020–21) meant that he and Tanu Non’s fictitious half had more responsibility.

“Being older (at the age of 18) I had to take charge and I feel like I did well in the first two rounds, but there is still a lot of competition ahead,” Lynn said.

Like Sexton and Weaver, Lynn signed with the Titans.
