boris johnson race and lead the UK’s Conservative Party to become the country’s next prime minister. Both candidates clashed in a sometimes heated debate Monday night.

The latest two candidates nominated are Foreign Minister Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, the former head of the treasury who stepped down from Boris Johnson’s government last month.

The competition has largely revolved around taxes and the economy in the post-COVID world, as well as immigration and sailing in post-Brexit era waters.

During a televised debate on Monday, Sunak had the most to prove, but it was Truss who jumped on his track record, declaring, “Rishi, you just raised taxes to the highest in 70 years. How can you say that this will lead to economic growth, and where has the growth policy been for the last two and a half years?”

Sunak defended his position and stated, “Pay attention to the slide “Financial responsibility”… it will lead us straight into poverty.” Inflation and the high cost of living were also the focus of the candidates.

Sunak said the country needed to get inflation under control, warning that if it wasn’t done now, mortgage rates would rise to 7%. He also said that millions of people would fall below the poverty line, meaning that the Conservative Party would have no chance of winning the next election.

Truss, who leads the polls, wanted to know why he supports raising taxes during an economic downturn. According to Niall Gardiner, director of the Heritage Foundation’s Margaret Thatcher Freedom Center, Truss outdid her rival.

“Rishi Sunak, as a former chancellor, seemed overly impatient and overly aggressive, constantly interrupting, and that was not good for Mr. Sunak,” Gardiner said.

Sunak interrupted Truss 22 times during the first 12 minutes of the debate, leading to criticism from members of the conservative partyand showed, perhaps, why he is drawn to the Truss.

Gardiner continued, “He comes across as someone who is increasingly desperate, and the debate certainly reflected that … it was Liz Truss’ calm and commanding performance.”

During the campaign, both Sunak and Truss claimed to be the heirs of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, but Gardiner said the title belongs to only one of them.

Boris Johnson signed as British Prime Minister

Liz Truss is definitely a Thatcherite. She is a big fan of Margaret Thatcher and her political ideas are heavily influenced by Thatcherism. On the contrary, Rishi Sunak is not the heir of Margaret Thatcher.”

Gardiner, who was an adviser to Lady Thatcher, told Fox News Digital that: “Many of his policies are against Thatcher’s ideas. Sunak’s reputation as chancellor, when he significantly raised taxes, spent huge amounts of public money, Margaret Thatcher was shocked. Sunak is not Thatcher, Liz Truss can make a strong case that she is a politician following in the footsteps of Margaret Thatcher.”

Truss is becoming more likely to win when the results are announced in early September, Gardiner said, but he said that if Sunak returns, he will have to “change some of his political positions and move significantly to the right in his views.” his campaign, but I don’t think Conservative voters will be convinced that he will change his stance, and I think right now Liz Truss is on a dominant political trajectory and is likely to be the next prime minister.”
