The massive 170-carat pink diamond found in Angola is reported to be the largest diamond yet. find in 300 years.

The diamond, named “Rose Lulo”, was discovered on Wednesday in a riverbed at the Lulo alluvial diamond mine. The diamond mine is owned by the Lucapa Diamond Company.

The rarity of a diamond’s size and color makes the stone valuable, but it’s unclear how much it will sell for due to its color.

“Only one in 10,000 diamonds is colored pink. So you are definitely looking at a very rare item when you find a very large pink diamond,” Lucapa CEO Steven Weatherall told The Associated Press.

The company is looking for a major source of diamonds, Wetherall said in a press release. Lulo – alluvial minewhich means that the stones are taken from the river bed.

“We are looking for the kimberlite pipes that brought these diamonds to the surface,” Weatherall said. “When you find these high value large diamonds…it certainly adds to the excitement from our point of view in our hunt for the original source.”

About 400 people work at the Lulo mine and they are responsible for finding two of the largest diamonds in the country, including a 404-carat clean diamond.

The pink gemstone is the fifth largest diamond discovered by the company, which has unearthed 27 stones over 100 carats.

The pink diamond will sold at an international tender Angolan state diamond marketing company Sodiam. Angola’s mines make it one of the top 10 diamond producers in the world.

“This record and the impressive pink diamond recovered from Lulo continue represent Angola as an important player in the global diamond mining scene and demonstrates the potential and rewards for commitment and investment in our growing diamond industry,” said Diamantino Azevedo, Minister of Minerals, Oil and Gas of Angola, according to the Lucapa website.

A pink diamond is an impressive size, but many clear diamonds are over 1,000 carats. The Cullinan diamond found in South Africa in 1905 weighs 3106 carats and is in the Scepter of the British Sovereign.
