Taiwanese Say China’s Threats Over Nancy Pelosi’s Visit Are Just Chatter

The people of Taiwan are mostly unfazed by China’s recent actions. threats of military action if Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi visits the island.

News of Pelosi’s potential trip to Taiwan was leaked last week. She will be the highest-level US official to have visited the island since Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich in 1997. habit of such threats for similar visits in the past.

“For the Taiwanese people, Chinese threats have never stopped in recent decades. This happens every day,” Taiwanese MP Wang Tingyu told Reuters on Thursday.

“Taiwan should be on guard, but Taiwan will not succumb to fear,” he added.

Taiwanese resident and educator Chen Yen-chen said China is currently making “mostly verbal threats,” “so I’m completely at ease this time,” he told Reuters.

Pelosi’s trip has placed her in a unique political position. Republicans on Capitol Hill urging her to carry out the plan, while President Joe Biden advised her not to.

“Speaker Pelosi should definitely continue her trip to Taiwan. She might want to consider adding a prominent Republican like Kevin McCarthy, House Republican leader, to showcase the bipartisan support that exists in that country for Taiwan. We cannot allow Chinese threats to prevent a mere visit by a member of Congress to Taiwan,” Senator Tom Cotton, D-Arkansas, told Fox News Tuesday.

“If a Joe Biden interferes with Nancy Pelosi or any other member of Congress from going to Taiwan, it will create a major foreign policy crisis,” he added.

Although China threatened military action in response to the visit, The Pentagon doesn’t think it’s likely that the nation will attack Pelosi directly. However, the US military is making plans to protect her if she leaves.

Pelosi has yet to announce a final decision on whether she will agree to the trip.
