Explosive device planted by drone exploded Headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, six people were injured, Russian officials said on Sunday.
The attack took place during Russian Navy Day celebrations in Sevastopol, a port city in Crimea annexed by Russia in 2014. The drone turned out to be homemade, and the explosive device was relatively low-powered. The mayor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhaev, did not specify the severity of the wounds of the six victims.
It is unclear who was responsible for the attack.
The attack happened on the same day that Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a new naval doctrine of Russia. in St. Petersburg.
Putin said that Russia intends to consolidate its status as a world maritime power and called the US its main global adversary.
The Russian leader also warned that Russian warships would soon be equipped with hypersonic weapons.
“The main thing here is the capabilities of the Russian navy,” Putin said during his Sunday speech. “He is able to respond with lightning speed to anyone who decides to encroach on our sovereignty and freedom.”
Putin’s invasion of Ukraine will end its fifth full month on Sunday as fighting continues in eastern Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has ordered a mandatory evacuation of Donbas residents as heavy fighting continues in the area.
“The more people leave [the] Donetsk region now, the fewer people the Russian army will have time to kill,” Zelensky said on Sunday.
“Many refuse to leave, but it still needs to be done,” he said. “If you have the opportunity, talk to those who still remain in the war zone in Donbass. Please convince them to leave.”
