American lottery player wins over $1.3 billion jackpot

A lucky US lottery player has won a Mega Millions jackpot worth more than $1.3 billion, one of the biggest prizes ever, a US lottery official confirmed Saturday.

The official Mega Millions website reports that the only ticket holder in the state of Illinois in the Midwest, whose identity has not yet been established, guessed six magic numbers and won the jackpot, estimated at 1.337 billion dollars (22.17 billion rands).

“We are thrilled to be witnessing one of the biggest jackpot wins in Mega Millions history,” Pat McDonald, Lead Director of the Mega Millions Consortium, said on the group’s website. “We really want to know who won and look forward to congratulating the winner soon!”

The top prize has grown steadily, fueling the dreams of potential winners across the country for over three months. The prize has remained unclaimed in 29 previous draws.

According to US government data, the odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are one in 303 million, which is much higher than the one in a million chance of being struck by lightning.

World Record Lottery Prize

Friday’s total falls short of the $1.586 billion world record set in January 2016 by America’s other national lotto, Powerball, although the total was split between three winners.

The second largest prize ever – and the largest prize ever won by a single person – was the $1.5 billion Mega Millions draw in October 2018.

The $1.337 billion figure for Friday’s draw is the total amount the winner would have been entitled to had they accepted the prize divided by the 30-year annuity.

If the lucky winner had instead opted to receive the winnings as a lump sum cash payment, the total would have been reduced to $780.5 million. Mega Millions estimates.

Then taxes would eat up a significant portion, leaving the winner with an unimaginably large cauldron.

Winners are generally advised to seek the assistance of financial advisors immediately, even before receiving a prize.

Financial planner Robert Pagliarini also recommends that big winners “take a moment out of the madness of the situation” and think carefully about the parts of their lives they “don’t want to change.”

Mega Millions is played in 45 US states. Friday’s winning numbers are 13-36-45-57-67 and 14.
