The Chinese military announced it will conduct live-fire naval exercises in the Taiwan Strait on Saturday ahead of a possible visit to Taiwan. Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.

Tensions in the region are high, with a US strike force heading for the South China Sea and Pelosi possibly heading to Taiwan on his US tour. Asian allied countries like Japan and Malaysia. Pelosi could become the highest-ranking American elected official to visit Taiwan since 1997.

Chinese officials exploded in anger at the proposal, stating that such a visit would violate the one-China policy and constitute an aid to an illegal insurrection. If Pelosi does try to visit Taiwan, one Chinese state media official even suggested shooting down her plane.

According to state media, the Chinese exercise was supposed to take place within 13 hours.

The People’s Republic of China has long claimed sovereignty over Taiwan and the Taiwan Strait, a relatively narrow strip of ocean between the island of Taiwan and the Chinese mainland. The Chinese military frequently sent planes to the area to inspect Taiwan’s air defense zone.

The US has no official relationship with Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China, and maintains One China policy which recognizes the People’s Republic of China as its legal successor.

However, America is stepping up engagement with the island as China seeks to isolate it from global institutions.

In anticipation of the visit, the US military is also moving troops to the ocean area near Taiwan.

The Pentagon sent an aircraft carrier to the South China Sea ahead of a possible visit by Pelosi to Taiwan.

USS Ronald Reagan and the strike team are currently there after they left port in Singapore on Tuesday. A Navy spokesman confirmed the news but said it was a planned trip.

“I can confirm that the USS Ronald Reagan and her strike team are currently en route and operating in the South China Sea following a successful visit to the port of Singapore,” the lieutenant said. Mark Langford said. “For policy reasons, we are not discussing future ship movements, however I will add that Reagan is continuing his normal scheduled operations as part of his routine patrols in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific.”
