England won their first major women’s championship in dramatic fashion by beating Germany 2-1 after extra time in the Euro 2022 final.
The victory was watched by 87,192 spectators at Wembley Stadium, which is a record for the final of the European Championship, both men’s and women’s.
England’s Ella Thun opened the scoring midway through the second half with a deft strike before Lina Magall called the game into extra time to equalize.
Ten minutes before the penalty shoot-out, Chloe Kelly threw the ball over the line at close range and scored the winning goal to avenge Germany’s 6-2 defeat in the 2009 final in Finland.
