A Ukrainian grain tycoon and his wife were killed after the southern city of Mykolaiv came under heavy shelling on Sunday. Russian President Vladimir Putin used the national Navy Day to issue more militaristic threats to anyone who undermines Russia’s “sovereignty and freedom”.

The attack killed grain tycoon Oleksiy Vadatursky and his wife Raisa, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a statement. Vadatursky was the founder of the Nikolaev company “Nibulon”, one of the largest companies in Ukraine for the production and export of grain.

“This is a big loss for the Mykolaiv region and all of Ukraine,” Zelensky said. “Over more than 50 years of his career, Alexey Vadatursky has made an invaluable contribution to the development of the region and the development of the agricultural and shipbuilding industries in our country.”

The mayor of Nikolaev, Alexander Senkevich, said that cluster munitions had smashed windows and destroyed balconies. “Nikolaev was subjected to massive shelling today. Probably the strongest of all time,” the statement said.

The CNN team on the ground heard the explosions caused by the strikes and saw the fires that started from the shelling. Residents interviewed by CNN also said it was the heaviest shelling of the city since the start of the war.

Vitaly Kim, head of the Mykolaiv regional military administration, said at least one person died and two were injured in the attack.
