Aaron Judge Hits 43rd Home Run, Yankee First Team 70 Wins Over Mariners

Aaron Judge hit his 43rd major league home run, Jose Trevino hit his first multiplayer game, and the New York Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners 7-2 on Monday night in a series-opener between weight-gaining teams in the postseason.

Anthony Rizzo started the onslaught with a three-time homer in the first, and New York set their 31st consecutive home winning record (41-13), second only to their major league standard of 47 in a row from 1918 to 1964. The Yankees are 70-34, the first team to reach 70 wins this year.

Before the game, the Yankees acquired starter Frankie Montas and reliever Lou Trivino from Oakland, three days after Seattle acquired Luis Castillo, arguably the best available starter in the trading market. Castillo is set to start Wednesday’s final series against Yankees ace Gerrit Cole.

“Just a dominant starter, has been a dominant starter for quite some time now,” Judge said of Montas. “He’s got some ridiculous stuff and he’s just happy that we don’t have to deal with that again in the future.”

Rizzo Pits yankees ahead in the first with a three-way homer from Marco Gonzalez (6-11). A ride over the Yankees’ bullpen on the right was Rizzo’s fourth homer in six games and boosted his season total to 26 along with 65 RBIs.

“He’s a really good striker who finds his way,” manager Aaron Boone said. “He worked hard to find that middle ground.”

After a solo homer from Kyle Lewis in the second match against Domingo Hermán (1-1), Judge landed a double shot in the bottom half. Judge also leads the big players with 93 RBIs.

Trevino scored in the fourth and added a drive to Monument Park in the eighth against Ryan Boruca. The No. 1 All-Star has nine homers this year, matching his total in the previous four major league seasons, and set a career high with 32 RBIs.

Seattle has lost seven of 11 since entering the All-Star Game after a 14-game winning streak.

Adam Frazier hit a hitting single in the fourth round against Herman, who won for the first time in three starts since he was taken off the injured list. He allowed two runs and six hits in five innings with three walks and a strikeout.

With Alex Rodriguez sitting at home plate, Judge hit a 420-foot drive by sending an 87.4 mph fastball on the first pitch in the away bullpen in left field after doubling down on the first pitch he saw in front of Rizzo’s homer.

“It’s nice to see what he’s doing right now,” Boon said. “So I think obviously it was part of his game plan tonight, being aggressive. Got what he was looking for in first pair at-bats and put big swings on it.”

Judge hit 67 homers, six more than the Yankees record set by Roger Maris in 1961. . 12, 1961.

He joined Barry Bonds (2001), Mark McGwire (1998) and Babe Ruth (1921) as the fourth player to hit at least 43 homers in his team’s first 104 games.

“Aaron Judge is having a monstrous season and you have to be fine and play on the edge with the fastball, and we couldn’t do that,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said.

Eligible for free agency after the World Series, Judge has hit 10 homers in 12 games since the All-Star broke 13 in his last 16 games.

Ron Marinaccio, Aroldis ChapmanJonathan Loaisiga and Vandi Peralta had one hit together but failed to score.

Gonzalez allowed six runs for the first time since giving up seven on July 3 last year. in Texas. He hit nine hits in 5 1/3 innings and for the second time in three starts equaled his career high of three homers allowed.

MEETING WITH CASTILLO

Luis Castillo reported to Seattle after being acquired Friday night from Cincinnati for four prospects, and set up a bullpen session in front of an audience of teammates and coaches.

“The guys were very excited about what they saw there, as it should be,” Serve said. “He has luxury stuff.”

Castillo also met the Yankees with red July 14, when he missed the sixth bet.

SAILORS MOVING

Seattle traded LHP’s Anthony Misevich for Kansas City in cash. Misevich was 0-1 with a 4.61 ERA in 17 games before being reassigned on Sunday. The Mariners also demanded that Travis Jankowski waive the Mets, who named him for Friday’s assignment. Jankowski hit .167 in 43 games for the Mets.

TRAINING CREAM

Mariners: 1B Ty France missed his second game in a row with left wrist pain. Manager Servais said that France is feeling better but is not yet ready for change.

Yankees: RHP Luis Severino (right lat) quit for the first time since being listed as injured on July 14. Severino was also placed on a 60 day IL along with RHP Miguel Castro (right shoulder sprain). … RHP Clark Schmidt was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre and RHP Carlos Espinal opted for the Scranton contract.
